Ernest G. Link enlisted on Dec.11, 1942 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin and was inducted into the military on February 26, 1943 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Following basic training at Fort Warren, WY (quartermaster basic training) and Fort Leonard Wood, MO (infantry basic training), he, along with 12,000 other infantry replacements, boarded the H.M.S. Mauritania in New York City on September 16, 1944. The troop ship arrived in England approximately 6 or 7 days later
he troops boarded an English train, traveling to camp Delemere Park near the city of Chester, England. After five weeks of additional training, troops boarded the Belgian ship Leopoldville for the Channel crossing, arriving in France on October 13, 1944. At the village of Caranten,

France, the troops boarded a train which took them to a replacement depot near the city of LeMans. We were transported by truck to other replacement depots near the cities of Neufchateau and Jarny. On November 9, 1944, I was among 35 men assigned to Company I, 3rd Battalion of the 377th Infantry Regiment. I remained in Germany until June 13, 1945, when we boarded a train at Haltern, Germany and started our homeward trip. We traveled to Camp Old Gold, a temporary troop assembly area, near Le Harve, France. On June 19th we boarded the US Navy transport USS General Gordon and set sail for the US on June 20, 1945. I was honorably discharged on November 19, 1945 at Fort Custer (Percy Jones Hospital Center), Michigan.
